Capsule Wardrobe Essentials: 10 Must Have's
Posted on December 17 2019
We’re big fans of capsule wardrobes! Why? Because, we’re big fans of dressing mindfully, feeling incredible in everything in your closet and not wasting bandwidth in your brain on agonizing over what to wear. Capsule wardrobes are all ANYONE can talk about these days which puts the in the “trend” category BUT they’ve actually been around a long time and we think (and hope) they’re here to stay.
By definition, a capsule wardrobe is “A small collection of very versatile, high-quality pieces that you love.”
No matter what the size of your closet it or where you fall on your capsule wardrobe journey, there’s no question that a solid foundation will make your life much easier. We don’t subscribe to the idea that a capsule wardrobe has to be only neutral, however, we do recommend you start with these 10 capsule wardrobe essentials and then build it out from there.
1 - A Blazer
A great blazer is a perfect layering piece and instantly pulls together an outfit for a more polished look. We recommend a neutral like black but charcoal grey or even camel will serve as a great staple in your closet as well.
2 - Tank Top or Camisole
Tanks & camisoles in black, white, or grey can be worn with just about anything. Whether you’re sporting a sheer blouse or looking for something easy to wear under a cardigan or blazer, you can’t go wrong with this basic.
3 - The Perfect Jean
Although jean trends change often, a classic ankle cut skinny jean that fits you perfectly is a must. We love ankle cut because they can be worn with any boots but still look great with pumps and because they can be dressed down with a slouchy sweater or pulled together with a camisole and a blazer.
4 - Luxe Sweater
Fall and winter capsule wardrobes call for a beautifully cozy sweater. Choose a lightweight, thin knit so that you can wear it on it’s own or layer it with your outerwear. Camel, Whites or dark neutrals like black, grey & navy are always great choices.
5 - Cardigan or Kimono
Mid-length cardigans and kimonos go a long way in any capsule wardrobe. This piece can instantly transform an outfit spring/summer to fall/winter but it can also give you plenty of additional outfit options while keeping you cozy.
6 - White T-Shirt
A classic white T is (or should be) a staple in everyone’s wardrobe - capsule or otherwise. It’s one of the things that comes in very handy, goes with everything and can be dressed down by wearing it on it’s own or dressed up by adding a statement necklace, blazer and a great handbag.
7 - Neutral Blouse
A beautiful button down is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Tuck it into a pair of high-waisted jeans for a tailored look - and layer it with a blazer in cooler weather. It works with jeans, shorts, skirts & even leggings.
8 - Trench or Wool Coat
A great wool or wool-like trench elevates any outfit. We love the sophistication of a below-the-knee, belted coat with an oversized collar in camel, cream or light grey. It takes any outfit to the next level.
9 - Little Black Dress
A little black dress isn’t an everyday staple but it’s one piece that will come in handy again and again. Find a dress that’s versatile enough to dress up with heels & accessories or dress down with boots and a scarf.
10 - Everyday Shoe
The best shoe for your capsule wardrobe depends on your lifestyle. If you spend your days in an office, the right shoe for you will be different from someone who has a less corporate career. Find a couple of pairs of shoes that can transition you from day to evening on most days.
